The S-76 is a twin-engine multi-mission helicopter by American rotorcraft manufacturer Sikorsky. The helicopter is a conventional (tail rotor) design that comprises a 4-blade main rotor system, an articulated rotor head, and retractable landing gear. It is piloted by one or two.
Designed in the mid-1970s (the name S-76 is a reference to America’s Bicentennial, 1976) specifically for the civilian market, the helicopter first took flight in 1977. It was introduced in early 1979 and since then Sikorsky has introduced a series of variants. The S-76 remains in production.
The S-76 has seen wide use, primarily in civil markets, but has also seen military operation. It is a powerful, stable, and highly maneuverable rotorcraft that has a spacious cabin that can carry up to 13 passengers, cargo, or a combination. Uses for the helicopter have included industrial support (notably offshore oil drilling), VIP transport, air ambulance, and business charter.
The S-76 measures 52 feet, 6 inches in length, stands 14 feet, 6 inches tall, and has a main rotor diameter of 44 feet. It is powered by two Turbomeca Arriel 2S2 turboshaft engines that each produce up to 922 shaft horsepower. The helicopter has a range of 473 miles and a cruise speed of 178 miles per hour.
