Airport Anadyr (Coal) named after Yu. S. Rytseu (IATA: DYR, ICAO: UHMA) – international airport of federal basing in Anadyr, the capital of the Chukotsky Autonomous Okrug. It is used by transit aircraft as a spare airfield.
The main goal of building an airfield is the possibility of refueling, replenishment of bomb weapons (including nuclear ammunition) of the USSR strategic aircraft in case of war with the United States. For storage of nuclear ammunition in permafrost (about 10 km from the airfield) in the mid-1950s, a huge underground portal storage was built with complete antiatomic protection.
