Fernando de Noronha Airport – Governador Carlos Wilson (IATA: FEN, ICAO: SBFN), is a Brazilian airport and was built in 1934. In 1942, during World War II, the United States Army Air Force through the “Airport Development Program”, received the new runway and the passenger terminal. In 1975, there was a landing of Boeings.
The airport operates domestic flights and has the capacity to receive medium-sized aircraft such as the Boeing 737. The current passenger terminal is considered small for the daily flow of passengers it receives, and should be renovated. The release of the public notice by the Government of the State of Pernambuco is expected so that the bidding process for a future renovation can be carried out.
The current maneuvering yard allows simultaneous operation of up to 03 Boeing 737s and a runway is 1840 m long. After the refurbishment, the forecast is that the airport will carry up to 7 aircraft simultaneously. Also, the forecast for 2025 is that the airport will handle approximately 276,000 passengers a year. According to the Civil Aviation Secretariat, in data revealed on October 22, 2015, this is one of the 65 airports in Brazil that handles the most passengers. It is among the 15 in the Northeast and the 3 in Pernambuco.
On December 21, 2015, Anac raised the classification of the airport to 2nd category (before 3rd), being on the same level as many airports in capital cities, such as João Pessoa (PB), Vitória (ES) and Goiânia (GO). Another state in the same category is Petrolina International Airport – Senador Nilo Coelho.
