The International airport of Magadan (Sokol) named by V. S. Vysotsky (IATA: GDX, ICAO: UHMM) is an airport of federal significance, located near the village of Sokol, north of the city of Magadan on 50 km of the main Kolyma Road.
It provides regular flights to the Magadan Region with airports in the Russian Far East (including the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug), Siberia and Moscow.
On December 13, 1980, the first IL-62 aircraft landed at the Magadan Airport. From the next day, the airliners began to make regular non-stop flights from Magadan to Moscow.
The Magadan air squadron, formed in 1963 from the flight personnel of the old air bases, existed until 1991, when it was reorganized. In 1991, Magadan Airport received the status of an international airport.
On April 20, 2016, Magadan Airport officially received the status of a federal airport.
On May 31, 2019, the airport was named after V. S. Vysotsky.
On December 9, 2019, a Boeing 747-8F arrived from Moscow to Magadan for the first time on an AirBridgeCargo flight. One of the largest aircraft in the world delivered 62.6 tons of cargo.
